Today we took a jeep ride up the mountain.  It was a 2 hour trip climbing over 2000 feet.  They picked us up at the campground so we could leave Flower in the air conditioning, since today's high was 98.  Here's a picture of our driver, Jeff and the jeep.
We sure were glad that Jeff was doing the driving.  The road was very rough - stone and rock.  During the winter part of it is closed off.  There are no guard rails and cars have been known to go over the cliff.  The sights were amazing.

The above pictures are of submarine rock or steamboat rock depending on who you talk to.

This is mitten rock -- see the thumb??

Here's chimney rock.  There must be one in at least every state out here.

Munds Mountain

Temple Rock

The indians made a wagon trail over the mountain to take their goods to Flagstaff.  It took them 3 days to do the same thing we did in 2 hours.

From the top of mountain, you could see the town of Sedona.  Here are some views.

If you can see the greenish line middle left - that is the Sedona Airport.

The red rock of Sedona was caused by water washing over the limestone rock and leaving the iron residue causing the red color.  The white-gray rock is the same limestone but was caused by wind erosion-no water erosion.  The scenery is changing gradually - will probably look a little different in 650 years.

Most of the rocks were named by the indians since there were no GPSs or Google Earth to help them find their way.  We didn't know that the indians knew about Snoopy though.  Here he is lying on his back on top of his dog house.

We're getting closer to the top!!!

Here are some cow pies.  How would like to have to clean up after those cows!!!

Here's the Kings!!

San Francisco Mountains

The Century Plant which is what the indians called this plant since it takes along time for it to shoot the stalk up that contains the sugar which is used to make tequila.

Plant before shoot comes out.
The shoot comes up and is bright red buds.
When it blooms, it is bright yellow.  The plant only sends out one shoot.  After it's done the plant dies.

Here are some of the other flowers we saw.

Paintbrush
Here we are in our jeep.

Tomorrow, we are looking forward to see our friends from Phoenix.  Friday, we will heading for the Grand Canyon, South Rim.
