We finally arrived in Silverton.  Silverton became a prosperous mining community after the first major silver strike in 1871.  The town was divided in half - on one side were the families and the other side was wild ones - saloons and bordelios.  Several movies have been filmed in Silverton.

Silverton from the train.

We ate lunch at Natalia's 1912 Restaurant which use to be Mattie's Bordelio.  Bernie had to go in the back door because of his scooter.  He said that his biggest dream was to go in the back door of a bordelio, but I don't think he thought it would be like this.

Bernie couldn't go into any of the shops with me to look because of his scooter, so he sat outside and took pictures of the town.  I guess you could tell Bernie took all of these pictures and those of the prior post.

There was 3 kinds of seating - these red cars were premium seating, the next yellow car was an open air car and the next one was enclosed regular seating.  Bernie had booked the enclosed car which I thought was a mistake  but after the cool weather, we enjoyed not being outside.   We felt like we were sitting on school bus seats but it wasn't that bad and we still got alot of good pictures. Outside of town, was this abandoned silver mine.

I found the perfect Christmas tree -- anyone volunteer to climb up the mountain to bring it home for me?

OUR CAMPGROUND FROM THE TRAIN
Our camper is behind the tree!!

This is our guy, Dillon - he always made sure Bernie had his scooter when he needed it  -- he was like a little kid.  We really had a great time.  All of the staff were so helpful and friendly.  Even the concession girl, Shanti, waited on us since we could walk back two cars to get drinks.  If you are ever in Durango, we highly recommend this trip.

  1. Wow! Trying to imagine my dad going through a backdoor of a bordello... Nope! That doesn't seem rational, at all! LOL!
Sounds like the train seats weren't very comfortable- Can you imagine if you'd had to sit there for days crossing the country? Ouch!
But I think I want Dillon's job. He looked like he was having a little too much fun riding Dad's scooter!!!
    Hugs!!
