We were headed for Sedona, Arizona.  We still had snow on the mountains and it's 6/21, first day of summer!!!

We passed Mesa Verde National Park.  We didn't stop. Along side the hill is the road up to the park.  We didn't think the camper would make the 20 miles up hill to the visitors center.  This is where the indian pueblos in the side of the mountain are.  One had 100 rooms and the other you had to climb a ladder 32 feet to see the house.  Of course, Bernie couldn't do any of that so we just saw the fringes of Mesa Verde.  Sorry, Marie, you'll have to get better and do your west trip next year!!!
If you see the ridge in the middle of picture -- that is the road!!

NAVAJO INDIAN RESERVATION

We gave the Navajos alot of land, but as you can see it wasn't worth much.  But they took advantage and put in a casino and it was packed -- out in the middle of no where.

Strange rock formations - one is from a distance and the other when we got closer.

Looks like Oz's castle from the Wizard of OZ, but there was no yellow brick road!!

Bernie nicknamed this mountain as Muffin Top

We didn't have great road either.

FOUR CORNERS
Four Corners is the only place in the country where four states meet.  The junture of Arizona, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico is marked by a monument bearing each state's seal.  In 1912, original monument was just a concrete slab - now it is granite and brass.

I'm standing in all four states!!!

BABY ROCKS

These rocks remained us of waves.  We could just invision the waters rushing through here thousands of years ago which shaped this whole area.

It seems funny to see these rock formations in the middle of barren land.

Almost dry river bed.

We were not sure what this is - I didn't see any grain growing.  But it was our understanding that they did find coal on the reservation.  Could this be a coal storage bin???

More rocks along side of the road.  The indians set up booths selling their wares.

We went by the Painted Desert - hope you can see the different colors.

When we went to Hawaii, the Japanese would build little shrines of rocks on top of the volcano.  Some of the formations remind us of those shrines but in a much bigger form and they weren't man-made.

Throughout Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona, we have been seeing signs "Watch for Wildlife" and the sign below.  However, the only wildlife we have seen is 1 deer in the middle of Durango, praire dogs and a chipmuck that ran across the road in front of us (almost became road kill).  Kyle I'm still looking for the Elk!!!

Finally arrived in Flagstaff, Arizona - not too much further to Sedona.
WE'RE HERE - ARRIVING AT SEDONA, ARIZONA AND BOY, IS IT PRETTY!!!

We were going to take a hot air balloon ride but since we have been out here and at higher altitudes, Bernie's breathing has not been real good.  So we have scratched that idea and tomorrow we will take a jeep ride into the mountains off road and Bernie won't be driving!!!

  1. It's hard to imagine all that dry land as an ocean bottom but I guess millions of years ago, large portion of the entire continent was just that. Why they find sea fossils out there.

So sorry you guys couldn't do the hot air balloon but yep, better safe than sorry! Looks like you're still having a great adventure!
